With the cost of food rising, the Johannesburg Children’s Home began looking for creative ways to fill its cupboards without breaking the bank. Decision-makers at the home quickly decided to try growing a vegetable garden to curb food costs.
Through the generous help of organizations such as ASBA Bank and Food and Trees for Africa, the home has been able to start its own vegetable garden. The home also uses food waste such as eggshells and potato peels as compost for the garden. The program has the added benefit of teaching children to grow their own fruits and vegetables, a sustainability skill that will serve them in their adult lives.
