Established in 1929, the South African National Council for the Blind is the national organization dedicated to blind individuals. It implements projects beneficial to the blind, promotes the rights of those with visual impairments, and maintains the standards of service for its members. In addition, it maintains affiliations with international organizations, including the World Blind Union and the Africa Union of the Blind.
To connect with its members, the organization hosts a biennial conference, with the 41st event occurring from October 15th through 17th in 2015 at the Elangeni Hotel in Durban. The conference featured keynote speakers, including Judge Zak Yacoob and Dr. Aubrey Webson, who spoke to the attendees. The first day of the conference featured a rally where members celebrated International White Cane Safety Day, where the Lafarge Community Trust sponsored 180 white canes for impaired individuals. Other events included a civic reception, exhibitions, and closing gala dinner.
